How to have the conversation with your loved one about a memory care community?

We know that this can be a difficult conversation, especially as someone’s care giver. When you have made the decision to move your loved one into a community, we want to help by suggesting tips on how to make this process seamless.

  1. Gather additional support from family and friends.

    • When you surround your loved one with the ones they love, it can make that the discussion a more united support system rather than defensive issue. We recommend you practice active listening when hearing from everyone and ensuring everyone is onboard with the plan of action and have no outstanding concerns. Your loved one is going to need your confidence when discussing this transition for them and yourself. You can also gather a professional in the room to bring a medical perspective to the conversation.

  2. Consider and create a conversation plan before meeting

    • This is crucial in ensuring that you and the support system you have created understand the talking points, the why behind your decision and the plan of action. With having a planned out conversation outline, it will provide better clarity for your loved one and understanding with what the next steps look like.

  3. Be sure to choose the right setting when having this discussion

    • Timing can be everything and we want to be sure your loved one is in their most comfortable time for this conversation. Maintaining their schedule and minimizes the amount of distractions is best when conveying a crucial discussion like this. We recommend in the morning when they are their most alert, over breakfast and at their most secure place.

  4. When establishing a core speaking point, focus on the benefits of a memory care community

    • This is crucial. Your loved one is going to need to hear you say the benefits and positives reasons why this is the best move for everyone involved. Imagine if you were being told by your parents they were moving towns. You would want to hear all the wonderful opportunities that are coming your way. Put that perspective into this conversation with your loved one. They will be leaning on you to understand the amazing life they will still live at the community.

If you are in a position where you feel this conversation is coming, please reach out. We would love to meet, speak and help you during this planning period. Our team understand the crucial nature of this conversation.
