Life After Being Diagnosed
Having a loved one diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease is the beginning of a difficult journey. However, there are many resources, support groups, and memory care communities, such as Westminster, that are available to provide the necessary help. It's important to be aware of the next few steps after this life-altering diagnosis.
First and foremost, find a primary care doctor for your loved one. This may or may not be the doctor who has diagnosed your loved one. If it is not, have the diagnosing doctor provide a list of referrals so that you can find a good fit for your loved one.
Find the appropriate support needed for your loved one and the family. The Alzheimer'sAssociation offers a 24-hour helpline that provides essential information, referrals, and care consultations.
As Alzheimer's is a progressive disease, it is important to plan ahead. While the disease may progress slowly over time, that may not always be the case. Start to make legal, financial, and medical plans. Throughout the progression of Alzheimer's, an individual may become unable to make these decisions alone.
While this journey can become difficult at times, that does not mean you have to go through it alone. For more information on what you can do for your loved one, contact the Alzheimer’s Association Helpline at +1(800) 272-3900 or Westminster Memory Care at (803) 356-7507.
